Finnish-Estonian-Finnish Translators’ Seminar in Käsmu and Helsinki, 14 to 19 June 2010

See photos A seminar for literary translators from Estonian into Finnish and vice versa was held in June, starting in Käsmu and ending up in Helsinki. Ten translators from both sides plus two Latvian translators working both with Estonian and Finnish literature had been selected to participate at this top-up course. The seminar involved lectures on language and literature as well as practical workshops on translating modern prose, classical prose and drama. The participants met publishers and writers on both sides of the Gulf of Finland.
The seminar was organised by FILI and ELIC in co-operation with Tuglas Seura and the Finnish Institute in Tallinn.

Estonian-German Translators’ Workshop, Visby 2009

See photos  The Estonian Literature Centre organised a workshop for translators of Estonian literature into German, hosted by the Baltic Centre for Writers and Translators in Visby, Gotland on the last week of May (25 to 30 May, 2009).
Estonian-German translators’ workshop focused on schooling young translators; from among talented native Germans eight were selected. The workshop programme included lectures on literary translation (Prof. Cornelius Hasselblatt), publishing business (Dr Oliver Ihle), the Estonian language (Katrin Kern) and literature (Prof Cornelius Hasselblatt and Irja Grönholm). A main emphasis was laid on practical work with literary texts (novel, drama and poetry), analyses of translations and discussing translation problems.
The workshop gave the participants a practical experience of translation. The graduates of the workshop should be able to translate literature from Estonian into German independently.
The workshop took place with the support of the Estonian Cultural Endowment, the Baltic Centre for Writers and Translators in Visby and Literature Across Frontiers.

Gothenburg Book Fair 2007: Estonia in Focus
|
In 2007 Estonia was the Guest of Honour. Established writers and less-well-known writers visited the Fair. Historians, politicians and cultural och social observers participated and presented the literature, the history and an overview of what's happening in Estonia today. In addition, cultural institutions and organisations in Göteborg also ensured a broad range of Estonian cultural events offered outside the Book Fair.www.bok-bibliotek.se

Translators' seminar 2006 in Visby, Gotland
|
 On a beautiful Thursday in May, eight translators-to-be convened in the city of Visby for a three day seminar on how to translate Estonian literature into Swedish. The scene of the seminar is also worth mentioning. Visby is located on the Swedish island of Gotland. Gotland is very close to the middle of the Baltic Sea, thus being a suitable location for the Baltic Centre for Writers and Translators, founded in 1993.

Looking back to translators' seminar 2005

It came as an extremely pleasant surprise early in the New Year to receive an invitation from the Estonian Literature Information Centre (ELIC) to attend the Estonian Translators’ Seminar in Käsmu and I was delighted to accept. I started learning Estonian two years ago and this would be my first visit to the country.

Translators' seminar 2005 in Käsmu, Estonia

 Every four years the Estonian Literature Information Centre summons together translators from all over Europe who are active and interested in propagating the literature of Estonia in other countries. This year it was time for another such gathering, and as before, the venue was the delightful seaside village of Käsmu, on a little peninsula halfway along Estonia's northern coast. For three days, from 18th to 21st May, 30 translators were able to meet, get acquainted, exchange views, enjoy the warm weather and come face to face with some of Estonia's best current prose authors, critics and poets - both established and up-and-coming.
